Wolf eels, despite their intimidating appearance and name, are fascinating creatures with some unique characteristics. While their teeth look very scary, and they have a powerful bite, when divers encounter them, they are known to have a very gentle nature, and will often approach divers. They live in dens within rocky reefs, which they often share with a lifelong mate and they may be bonded together for up to 20 years. The children will watch as the diver explores the depths, bringing back samples of sealife for an interactive encounter. The diver will educate them about each Sea creature and answer any questions about diving and the underwater world. After the adventure, we'll channel our creativity into Sealife art projects and embark on crabby scavenger hunts and interactive games while learning about each amazing creature. The Sealife Live class transported us to the depths of the ocean. A highlight of the session was watching the scuba diver descend into the kelp forests, their bubbles trailing upwards like shimmering pearls. With practiced ease, the diver carefully collected fascinating specimens- a delicate sea star, a crab with barnacles attached to his back, and a tiny shrimp for the children to see. The children gasped and pointed as the diver brought up each creature. The Diver explained their unique adaptations and captivating facts and answered all the kids tantalizing questions. All the while the diver explained about gentle handling of the marine life and the commitment to conservation and how crucial it is to protect these fragile ecosystems. The teacher reminded us that the divers touch was "light as a feather" and that every creature is returned carefully back to its home at the end of class. Then the assistant helped the diver gently put the creatures in a little Sea lab where the children looked at the fascinating creatures through microscopes and magnifying glasses. It was a fun immersive experience making the underwater feel both accessible and wonderfully mysterious.
